Mental Health Nutrition
What you eat and how you feel are more connected than you might think.

If you've ever noticed that you forget to eat when you're anxious or really focused, reach for certain foods when you're overwhelmed, or feel completely unable to plan a meal on a hard day... that's not a "willpower" problem. That's the relationship between your brain, your body, and your plate playing out in real time.

Mental health and nutrition are deeply intertwined. The gut-brain connection is real, the research is growing, and the impact of what we eat on how we think, feel, and function is significant. And yet nutrition is one of the most overlooked pieces of mental health care.

At Radica, we think that's worth changing.

We work with clients who are navigating the intersection of food and mental health. Whether that's managing a diagnosis, recovering from burnout, or simply trying to eat consistently on the days when everything feels hard, we're here to help. Our approach is neurodiversity-affirming, gentle, non-diet, and deeply practical. We're not here to hand you a wellness checklist or tell you that green smoothies will fix your anxiety. We're here to understand what's actually going on for you, in your body, in your day, and in your relationship with food. We want to help you build strategies that works in real life, especially on the hard ones.

How we support your mental health through nutrition

Anxiety and depression What we eat directly influences the neurotransmitters and hormones that regulate our mood. We work you to navigate anxiety and depression to build consistent, nourishing eating patterns that support your mental health without adding food stress on top of everything else you're already carrying.

Perinatal mental health conditions Postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, and other perinatal mental health conditions are very common yet under-supported, especially in terms of nutrition. When you're in the thick of it, eating is often the last thing on your mind, and yet it's one of the most powerful levers we have for supporting your mood, your energy, and your recovery. We work with clients navigating perinatal mental health conditions to build gentle, realistic eating habits that nourish both body and mind during one of the most vulnerable seasons of a woman's life, without adding any pressure to an already full plate.

The mental and physical sides of perinatal health are impossible to separate, and we don't try to. If you're looking for broader perinatal nutrition support, our women's health nutrition page speaks to that too.

ADHD Eating with ADHD is its own challenge. The forgotten meals, the difficulty planning ahead, the tendency to hyperfocus through lunch and then crash by afternoon. Plus, for many clients on stimulant medications, appetite suppression adds another layer making it even harder to eat enough, consistently, to support your energy and your brain. The unintentional lack of energy and nutrients takes a toll on both physical and mental health in ways that are easy to overlook when you're just trying to get through the day. We help clients with ADHD build flexible, low-barrier strategies around food that work with their brain, not against it. This includes practical approaches to eating around medication schedules when appetite just isn't there. We take out the complicated schedules and rigid rules and help you build realistic support that actually sticks.

Burnout and chronic stress When you're running on empty, food is usually the first thing to go. Does this sound familiar...? Skipped meals, haphazard eating, and running on caffeine paired with being extremely irritable. We help clients in burnout rebuild a sustainable rhythm around eating that supports their energy, their nervous system, their mood, and their mental health, without adding one more thing to the to-do list.

Executive dysfunction Planning, shopping, cooking, and eating consistently requires a lot of cognitive steps that can feel impossible on difficult days. We meet clients exactly where they are, whether that means building the simplest possible food routine or finding ways to make nourishment accessible even when capacity is low.

Something else? If your mental health makes eating hard, then you deserve help. If you don't see yourself listed here, then please reach out and we can see if we're the right fit for what you are working through.

A note on eating disorders: Yes, eating disorders do fall under mental health nutrition, but we treat those at our sister practice with specialized dietitians focusing solely on eating disorder recovery for teens and adults. Visit Aterra Nutrition here

How we work with your mental health care team

Nutrition doesn't exist in a vacuum, and neither does your care. At Radica, we have an established referral network of therapists, psychiatrists, and other mental health providers, and we strongly believe (and have seen in practice!) that coordinated care produces better outcomes than any one provider working alone.

If you're already working with a therapist or psychiatrist, we're happy to collaborate with your existing team when it's appropriate and with your consent. If you're not yet connected to mental health support but feel like you might benefit from it, we can help point you in the right direction. You deserve well-rounded care and a team that talks to each other so all your goals align.

I've Never Heard of Mental Health Nutrition. What Can I Expect?

We start where we always start: with you. With your history, your daily rhythms, your relationship with food, and the ways your mental health shows up at mealtimes and everywhere in between. From there we build something together that's realistic for your life, especially on the hard days.

Like all of our work at Radica, mental health nutrition counseling is non-diet and weight-inclusive. Sessions are virtual, judgment-free, and paced to what you can manage. We're not here to add pressure... we're here to take some off.

If you're curious about how nutrition might support your mental health — whether you're already in therapy, working with a psychiatrist, or just starting to connect the dots — we'd love to help.

I'm Overwhelmed, Can My Dietitian Just Tell Me What to Eat?

We hear this a lot, and we get it. When you're overwhelmed, the last thing you need is another decision to make. So yes, we can absolutely help you simplify. But rather than just handing you a list and leaving you to figure out the rest, we'll work together to find the smallest, most manageable starting point that actually fits your life right now. Some days that's a loose meal framework. Some days it's just making sure you're eating at all. We meet you where you are, especially if where you are is completely depleted.

My Situation Overlaps with Personal, Family, and Mental Health Nutrition; How Can Radica Help Me?

There are a few ways Radica can help you in this overlap. Here are two examples:

Feeding a neurodivergent child (or feeding yourself as a neurodivergent parent) is a particular kind of hard that most general nutrition advice completely misses. There's sensory sensitivities that can make certain food textures unbearable. There's executive dysfunction that makes meal planning feel impossible. The ADHD that means your child hyperfocuses through lunch AND snack and then melts down by dinner. The anxiety that turns mealtimes into a battleground before anyone has even sat down.

At Radica, we understand that neurodivergent families need a different kind of nutrition support. We account for the way your brain works, the way your child's brain works, and the very real complexity of getting food on the table when both of those things are happening at once.

We can help you build mealtime strategies that reduce sensory stress, work around executive dysfunction, and support everyone's nutritional needs without turning food into a source of conflict or shame. Whether you're a neurodivergent parent trying to feed your family, a parent supporting a neurodivergent child, or both at the same time, you're definitely in the right place. Bring the whole picture. We can help you hold it.

The postpartum season is another good example of how life rarely fits into one category. It affects your body, your mood, your household, and the way food shows up in all of it — all at once. If you're navigating new parenthood alongside a perinatal mood disorder like postpartum depression or anxiety, you're dealing with something that sits squarely at the intersection of women's health, mental health, and family nutrition. We support all three, and we're used to holding all three in the same conversation. You don't have to decide which part of your experience is most worthy of support. We encourage you to bring all of it to the table.

Does Intuitive Eating Actually Work for Neurodivergent Folks?

Yes — and also, it looks a little different. Intuitive Eating is built on the idea of tuning into your body's hunger and fullness cues, which is a beautiful framework. But for many neurodivergent people, those cues can be harder to access. ADHD can make it difficult to notice hunger until it becomes urgent. Sensory processing differences can make eating what sounds good complicated when most foods don't feel safe. Autism can bring a layer of interoceptive differences that make internal body signals genuinely harder to read.

So we don't apply Intuitive Eating as a rigid framework. We adapt it. We take the core principles that matter most: no food rules, no guilt, no restriction, full permission to eat, and we layer in practical strategies that account for the way neurodivergent brains and bodies actually work. That might mean building gentle external cues to support hunger awareness, finding a small repertoire of safe foods that feel genuinely nourishing, adding new foods only if/when you're ready, or creating just enough structure to make eating feel manageable without tipping into rigidity.

The goal is the same as it is for every client: a peaceful, sustainable relationship with food. We just know that the path there isn't one-size-fits-all. For neurodivergent folks especially, it never has been.

Can I Bring A Support Person Into My Sessions?

Absolutely. If having a partner, family member, or close friend in the room feels supportive to you, they're welcome. Sessions are your space first, so we ask that support people come with an open mind and follow your lead, rather than adding their own opinions about food or your body into the mix.

Not sure if bringing someone would be helpful? That's a great thing to talk through with your dietitian.
